Thanks for the suggestion, Judith – I just read a brand new translation. It was nothing like the children’s tale I half remember. However, I very much enjoyed it – and H. C. Andersen’s very strange humour. And I will continue reading Andersen: The book is still sitting on the ‘unread’ shelf.
Do you know the Hans Christian Andersen story? These would make ideal illustrations for it.
As a matter of fact, that was the story I had in mind although I do not remember all of it…
